The proposed new European Commission Directive would improve the working time rights for inland waterway workers by increasing the minimum weekly rest period and introducing specific provisions relating to (1) minimum daily rest periods, (2) maximum daily and weekly working times, (3) maximum number of consecutive days of work, and (4) maximum night working time. Once agreed by the Council, the proposed Directive will need to be implemented by 31 December 2016.
