CJEU rules catholic association cannot dismiss employee solely for leaving church

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has held in Katholische Schwangerschaftsberatung, Case C‑258/24 that a catholic association cannot dismiss an employee on the sole ground that the employee has left the catholic church where the occupational requirement to remain a member is not genuine, legitimate and justified in light of the organisation’s ethos. The court found that, as Katholische Schwangerschaftsberatung employs non‑catholics for the same pregnancy counselling roles, leaving the church does not, in principle, call into question its ethos or autonomy, and such a difference in treatment directly based on religion may be precluded under EU equal treatment rules. It is for the German Federal Labour Court to assess whether the association can show a probable and substantial risk to its ethos.

DBT publishes LPC remit for 2026

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has published a policy paper setting out the Low Pay Commission (LPC) remit for 2026. The remit asks the LPC to make recommendations for National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) rates to apply from 1 April 2027 and to submit its advice to the government by the end of October 2026. In making its recommendations on the NLW, the LPC is asked to ensure that the rate does not fall below two-thirds of median earnings for workers in the NLW population. The LPC is also required to take into account the cost of living, including inflation forecasts, as well as the impact on business, competitiveness, the labour market and wider macroeconomic conditions.

Actor dropped over anti-LGBT views cannot reopen bias case

Law360: The Court of Appeal (CoA) refused on 13 March 2026 to reopen a Christian actor's discrimination claim against a theatre company that dropped her from a musical production of 'The Color Purple' over an anti-gay social media post.
