Supervision & file reviews

Effective supervision is a regulatory requirement for law firms, as well as being good practice. It can help manage the risk of negligence, as well as other regulatory risks. File reviews are an effective supervision tool, but they are unlikely to be a complete answer to supervision.

Supervision

The SRA's core regulatory requirements in relation to supervision are found in the two Codes of Conduct (the SRA Code for Solicitors and the SRA Code for Firms), which should be read in the context of the SRA Principles. Requirements can also be found in the SRA Authorisation of Firms Rules, SRA Education, Training and Assessment Provider Relations, SRA Transparency Rules, and SRA Authorisation of Individuals Regulations.

Dyson loses application to take forced labour claim to Supreme court

Law360, London: Dyson will dispute claims in England that it did nothing about allegations of forced labour at Malaysian factories making components for the appliance manufacturer after the Supreme Court refused it permission to challenge jurisdiction in the case any further.

House of Lords pushes for AI and copyright transparency measures in Data (Use and Access) Bill

The House of Lords considered the amendments from the House of Commons to the Data (Use and Access) Bill on 12 May 2025. While the amendments regarding AI and copyright were generally accepted (see LNB News 08/05/2025 44), Baroness Kidron, who has been a staunch advocate for the creative industries, has proposed a new amendment to push for transparency from AI providers for copyright owners. The amendment, definitively agreed by a large majority, would oblige the government to introduce secondary legislation requiring AI developers and providers to publish information on 'the text and data used in the pre-training, training, fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation in the AI model, or any other data input to the AI model', in addition to information on any bots used in the AI development.

OFSI amends General Licence INT/2022/1678476

The Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) has amended General Licence INT/2022/1678476, which relates to the Amsterdam Trade Bank N.V – winding down, basic needs and insolvency related payments. The amendment extends the Licence from 23:59 on 12 May 2025 until 23:59 on 12 May 2030. The Licence has also been amended to enable Bankruptcy Trustees and any other insolvency practitioner to make, receive, or process any payments, exercise all rights, or take any other actions, in connection with (i) any Insolvency Proceedings relating to ATB and/or (ii) the fulfilment of the Bankruptcy Trustees’ statutory functions.

DBT publishes notice to exporters on updates to 13 OGELs to exclude nuclear power equipment

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has published a notice to exporters, announcing that the Export Control Joint Unit has updated the scope of 13 open general export licences (OGELs). Eight OGELs have been revised to exclude both military nuclear power generating equipment (ML17g) and naval nuclear propulsion equipment (ML9) from their scope. The remaining five OGELs have been updated to exclude naval nuclear propulsion equipment (ML9) only.
