Agreements under the higher level stewardship scheme (HLS) usually run for ten years, although occasionally twenty year agreements were offered on some inter-tidal and wetland options1. Normally the right for either side to break the agreement at the five year point would be available on one year's notice.

Beyond the terms of the specific HLS agreement, the requirements of the scheme are similar to those which applied under the entry level scheme2.
