8: FARM WOODLAND PREMIUM SCHEME

285 Background

The Farm Woodland Premium Scheme1 was available to farmers who had entered agricultural land into the Woodland Grant Scheme to be planted as woodland. It was designed to encourage the creation of new woodlands on farms2 with payments under the scheme compensating for agricultural income forgone.

The Farm Woodland Premium Scheme (FWPS) was superseded in England first by the English Woodland Grant Scheme and in particular the availability of Farm Woodland Payments under that Scheme and more recently by Countryside Stewardship. However, existing agreements under the old FWPS scheme will continue
