SRA publishes November 2025–October 2026 business plan on driving trust and consumer protection

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has published its November 2025–October 2026 business plan, setting out priorities focused on driving trust in legal services. The SRA’s key areas of work include tackling issues within the high-volume consumer claims market, protecting consumer interests through a consumer protection review and effectively using data and intelligence to identify and respond to new and emerging risks. The plan follows widespread consultation with the public and the profession to ensure priorities align with the SRA’s mission to enhance public confidence in legal services.

DBT and OFSI publish guidance on countering Russian sanctions evasion for fright and shipping sector

The Department for Business & Trades and the Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation has published detailed guidance for the freight and shipping sector on preventing Russian sanctions evasion. The guidance is designed to help businesses identify common methods of Russian circumvention and reduce the risk of becoming targets for those attempting to evade sanctions. The guidance specifically targets freight forwarders, carriers, hauliers, customs intermediaries, postal and express operators, and other companies facilitating the movement of goods and is an integral part of the UK government’s boarder framework of embargoes and trade sanctions.

LSB approves CILEx Regulation application for stand-alone litigation rights

The Legal Services Board (LSB) has approved an application from CILEx Regulation Limited (CRL) to amend its regulatory framework to allow Chartered Legal Executives (CLEs) to obtain stand-alone authorisation for litigation rights without the need to seek rights of audience concurrently. Acting under delegated authority, Interim Chief Executive, Richard Orpin, granted the application in full on 31 October 2025.

OFSI updates UK Financial Sanctions FAQs

The Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) has updated its UK Financial Sanctions FAQs, adding FAQ 172, which addresses the treatment of funds allocated by International Central Securities Depositories (ICSDs) following seizures by the designated National Settlement Depository (NSD). FAQ 172 clarifies that UK financial institutions do not require an OFSI licence to receive or handle such funds, provided that: (1) the NSD has no ownership or control over the funds; (2) no funds are made available to designated persons; and (3) no other financial sanctions are engaged. OFSI has also amended FAQ 53 on ‘Which sanctions regimes are covered by the Legal Services General Licence?’ and moved FAQs 7 and 49 to the withdrawn FAQs document.
