This can/could be done as a sole trader, or within a partnership or UK-registered company structure. The category closed to new entrants on 29 March 2019, at which time it was replaced by the Innovator and Start-up routes, which both required endorsement by an approved third-party endorsing body. After 29 March 2019, the only individuals who could enter the Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) category

Vignettes may no longer be issued for more routes from 30 October 2025

The Home Office has provided an update on its ongoing move to a fully digital system of immigration status by confirming that from 30 October 2025 successful applicants for entry clearance in ‘certain work, study and family visa routes’, or for settlement on any route, may not be issued with an entry clearance vignette in their passport, and instead will need to create a UKVI account and get access to it before they travel to the UK. At this stage there are no further details as to exactly which types of applicant this will apply to. From 15 July 2025 it has applied to main applicants (only) in the Student (including short-term up to 11 months), Global Business Mobility, Global Talent, International Sportsperson, Skilled Worker (including Health and Care), Temporary Workers, and Youth Mobility Scheme routes.

European Commission adopts 2026 Work Programme

The European Commission has adopted its 2026 Work Programme, Europe’s Independence Moment, setting out a new plan for Europe’s sustainable prosperity, competitiveness, and resilience. Building on its previous efforts under the 2024–2029 Political Guidelines, the 2026 Work Programme aims to strengthen Europe’s technological autonomy, energy security, and social cohesion while driving simplification and competitiveness across all sectors.

New Part Suitability—impact on family routes

Immigration analysis: Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules HC 1333 was published on 14 November 2025, and included a significant change to the suitability provisions under the Rules, which was not flagged in the Explanatory Memorandum. A new Part Suitability will replace Part 9 and this will affect additional groups of people who were previously only subject to the requirements of Part 9 in limited circumstances. This change was noted to be a part of the ongoing project to simplify the Immigration Rules, but in particular will affect people using family routes, still currently under Appendix FM, by imposing a number of stricter Rules on them. There are very limited exceptions for some suitability grounds on certain human rights routes. This analysis looks in detail at the changes.
