On 6 February 2020, the Commission referred the proposed acquisition by EssilorLuxottica of GrandVision for an in-depth phase II investigation (Case M.9569). At phase I, the Commission was concerned that the proposed transaction may reduce competition for the wholesale supply of ophthalmic lenses, eyewear and the retail supply of optical products. In particular, the Commission was concerned above several issues relating to the combination of EssilorLuxottica’s strong market position in the wholesale supply of optical products (particularly lenses and eyewear) and GrandVision’s leading presence in the retail distribution of these products.
