The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has reported that a former family intervention officer, Rachel Anderton, at St Helens Borough Council has been sentenced for unlawfully accessing social services records. The ICO has stated that an internal council audit found that Anderton had looked at the records of 145 people without business justification between 17 January 2019 and 17 October 2019. Anderton appeared at Wigan and Leigh magistrates' court on 11 September 2023 and pleaded guilty to one offence of unlawfully obtaining personal data in breach of section 170(1) of the Data Protection Act 2018. The ICO has noted that Anderton was fined £92, ordered to pay £385 for court costs as well as a victim surcharge of £32.
