Article summary

The News Media Association (NMA) has, in conjunction with other content creators, written to the Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, on 20 July 2022 warning that the proposed new text and data mining exception for any purpose would ‘fundamentally undermine’ investment in the content and data upon which artificial intelligence (AI) technologies rely along with the wider UK copyright framework highlighted as the ‘gold standard’. This letter with 19 signatories includes the Premier League, Motion Picture Association and UK Music, among others.  This has been followed with a further letter of concern from the Publishers Content Forum on 28 July 2022 to Kwarteng. On behalf of the government, the IP Minister, Lord Callahan, responded to this written question in the House of Lords and outlined how the proposed exception will be targeted to limit negative impacts, with the government welcoming further evidence from rights holders on the best means to achieve this.
