It is in the context of the grant or refusal of planning permission where the designation of an area as an European site is likely to have the most far reaching impact. Whilst the designation of land as a site of special scientific interest means that the local planning authority is required to have regard to the nature conservation interest of the site before granting consent, designation as an European site has much more far reaching consequences.
