153 Selection of local nature reserves

There are currently some 1,050 local nature reserves in England on sites which span a wide range of interest and uses. There is limited guidance as to the criteria which should be used for selecting suitable sites beyond that contained in the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 itself1. In essence, the judgement will be one for the local authority in consultation with Natural England and the Natural Resources Body for Wales2.
