C: LOCAL NATURE RESERVES

151 Background

Under Section 21 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, local authorities1 can make a declaration that land in which they have an interest is to be managed as a nature reserve if it appears expedient to the local authority. The local authority must either own, lease or have some other formal legal interest in the land so that they are able to ensure its management as a nature reserve in accordance with Section 21 of the 1949 Act2.
