120 Statutory undertakers

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 imposes specific obligations and duties on statutory undertakers in relation to sites of special scientific interest1. The definition of statutory undertaker is broad, including local authorities and other public bodies. They are placed under a duty to take reasonable steps, consistent with the proper exercise of the authority's functions, to further the conservation and enhancement of the special interest of the site of special scientific interest2 and to give notice to Natural England and the Natural Resources Body for Wales of their intention to undertake or authorise
