The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs have announced that they will table an amendment to the Online Safety Bill (OSB) in Parliament on 8 September 2023, under which social media platforms will be required to remove content encouraging or facilitating animal cruelty. Any platforms that fail to do so could be fined up to £18m or 10% of their global annual revenue. In addition, under the amendments, section 4(1) (unnecessary suffering) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 will be classified as a priority offence in the Bill.
