Article summary
The Sentencing Council has published revised guidelines for sentencing common assault and attempted murder. The revisions provide judges and magistrates in England and Wales with specific guidance for sentencing offences of assault on emergency workers for the first time. This reflects legislation increasing the maximum sentence for common assault when the victim is an emergency worker (Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018). Similarly, the sentence range for attempted murder has been increased up to 40 years. The guidelines are to come into effect from 1 July 2021.
