The Home Office has published the outcome of the consultation regarding PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984) Codes C and E. Code C concerns the detention, treatment and questioning of persons detained under PACE, while code E involves the audio recording of interviews with suspects. The consultation, which ran from 17 June to 3 July 2020, received 29 responses which have been published by the Home Office. It summarises the feedback that was obtained as well as the government’s decision to not apply a proposed temporary amendment to Code C. Instead, the government aims to ‘improve and extend guidance for existing interim interview protocol to ensure greater consistency of application’ and ‘to commence an exit plan to normality.’
