The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an initial review of competition and consumer protection considerations in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) foundation models. This review aims to understand how foundation models are developing and produce an assessment of the conditions and principles that will best guide the development of such models and their future use. The CMA outlines how AI developments impact a number of important issues, including human rights, safety, security, privacy, copyright and the ways markets work.
