Number of Home Office-approved sponsor employers, by visa route, as at 13 February 2025

The below data shows the number of Home Office-approved employer sponsors, according to visa route, as listed on the Home Office’s register of licenced sponsors on the specified date. As at 13 February 2025, Skilled Worker sponsors accounted for the majority of employers (85.27%). 7.81% of sponsors had a Global Business Mobility-Senior or Specialist Worker licence, and the remaining 15 work routes accounted for the remaining 6.92%.

Home Office updates Employer’s guide to right to work checks for end of biometric cards

The Home Office has issued a new version of the Employer’s guide to right to work checks, which includes a number of technical changes and clarifications, and also updates the guidance for the expiry of Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) on 31 December 2024. The Landlord’s guide to right to rent checks has been updated in a similar way.

UNISON publishes report on exploitation of migrant care workers in the UK

UNISON has released a report titled ‘Caring at a Cost’, which highlights numerous examples of exploitation of migrant care workers in the UK. Based on a survey of over 3,000 overseas health and care worker visa holders, the report uncovers illegal practices including exorbitant placement fees, substandard accommodation, and racist abuse. Some workers reported paying over £20,000 to intermediaries for job placements, while others faced below-minimum wage pay and threats of dismissal or deportation for raising concerns. UNISON is calling for the government to assume sponsorship of migrant care staff from employers and implement a fair pay agreement as part of a national care service for England. These measures aim to prevent exploitation, improve working conditions, and address the ongoing staffing crisis in the care sector.
