The Parent of a Child Student route permits a parent to accompany or join their child who has, or is at the same time applying for, permission as a Child Student under the Immigration Rules, Appendix Child Student. The child must be aged between 4 and 11, and undertaking study at an independent fee-paying school in the UK (which must not be a state school or academy).

Reunite Families UK reveals negative impact of financial requirements for family visas on British children

Reunite Families UK, in collaboration with Coram Children's Legal Centre (CCLC), has released preliminary findings from child-centred interviews highlighting the impact of the UK's family immigration rules on British children. The research, conducted between October and November 2024, examines the effects of both the previous £18,600 and the new £29,000 Minimum Income Requirement introduced in April 2024. Key findings include increased anxiety, stress, and financial strain among children, as well as disrupted family relationships, as a result of these requirements. As the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) reviews financial requirements for family visas, Reunite Families UK, CCLC, and the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association urge the MAC to prioritise the experiences of affected families, particularly children, in its assessment.

HoC Library publishes briefing on special visa schemes for Ukrainians

The House of Commons (HoC) Library has published a research briefing detailing recent changes to special visa schemes for Ukrainians. Key developments covered include the closure of the Ukraine Family Scheme to new applicants in February 2024 and new restrictions on the Homes for Ukraine scheme, including reducing the visa length to 18 months and tightening sponsor eligibility. From February 2025, a new Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme will allow 18-month visa extensions, but there remains no pathway to settlement under the schemes. Time spent on Ukraine Scheme visas will no longer count towards the ten-year Long Residence route. The briefing also notes that the EU has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2026, which is one year beyond the generally anticipated maximum of three years under the Temporary Protection Directive.

Latest visa application figures confirm continuing reductions in Skilled Worker and Student routes

The Home Office has released provisional statistics on entry clearance visa applications up to November 2024. The data confirms the ongoing significant changes in application patterns following recent immigration policy reforms. Health and Care Worker visa applications have markedly decreased, with only 1,900 main applicant applications in November 2024, down from a peak of 18,300 in August 2023. Skilled Worker visa applications also declined to 4,100 in November 2024 (down from around 6,000 per month between January 2022 and March 2024, and a peak of 10,100 in April 2024). Sponsored study visa applications for January to November 2024 were 16% lower than the same period in 2023, with a substantial 85% reduction in dependant applications following new restrictions. These trends reflect the impact of policy changes implemented throughout 2024, including increased salary thresholds for Skilled Workers and limitations on dependants for Students and care workers.
