Parent of a Child Student

The Parent of a Child Student route permits a parent to accompany or join their child who has, or is at the same time applying for, permission as a Child Student under the Immigration Rules, Appendix Child Student. The child must be aged between four and 11, and undertaking study at an independent fee-paying school in the UK (which must not be a state school or academy).

Commission adopts EU Visa Strategy and recommendation on attracting talent for innovation

The European Commission has published the first EU visa policy strategy, intended to advance the EU’s long term interests and make visa policy more strategic and responsive to growing mobility, regional instability and geopolitical competition. The Strategy focuses on strengthening the security of the Schengen area, supporting economic growth and competitiveness and advancing the EU’s strategic interests, values and global standing. It is structured around three pillars: strengthening EU security, boosting competitiveness and deploying modern visa tools. It outlines plans to modernise visa processes through increased digitalisation, revised criteria for visa exemptions and targeted measures to address misuse of visa free regimes, with key steps scheduled for 2026 including a new assessment framework for exemptions, a revision of the Visa Code and the roll out of major border management IT systems. The strategy also highlights the introduction of restrictive visa measures in response to deteriorating relations with third countries, strengthened monitoring of visa free regimes and misuse such as unfounded asylum applications and overstays and enhanced tools for cooperation on return and readmission.

IAA publishes first annual report and accounts for 2024/25

The Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) has published its first annual report and accounts for 2024/25, detailing the organisation’s activities, achievements, performance and future priorities. Key performance metrics include 1,029 new adviser applications received, of which 599 were processed and approved; 1,220 continued registration applications approved and 206 organisations applying for first-time registration. During the reporting period, the IAA completed 84 audits and 41 investigations into complaints of illegal activity and managed over 320 regulatory enquiries. It received 606 referrals and conducted 16 competence assessment events, with 851 applicants sitting assessments and 464 passing. The publication of the report coincides with the progression of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025 through Parliament, which will provide the IAA with new regulatory powers in the next financial year.

Government responds to MAC Seasonal Worker visa review

The government has responded to the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC)’s Review of the Seasonal Worker visa, following a self-commissioned review launched on 23 March 2023. The response addresses five broad themes: providing certainty around the future of the scheme; allowing for a more flexible visa; fairer work and pay for workers; tightening, communicating and enforcing employee rights; and consideration of the Employer Pays Principle (EPP). The government confirmed a five-year continuation of the Seasonal Worker route, announced on 25 February 2025, and accepted the recommendation to provide greater certainty to the agri-food sector while linking the long-term future of the route to increased automation and reduced reliance on overseas seasonal labour.
