The European Commission has adopted an EU Livestock Strategy and an accompanying Protein Action Plan to strengthen the long-term resilience, competitiveness and sustainability of the livestock sector while increasing the EU's self-sufficiency in protein production. The Strategy sets out five priorities: strengthening resilience through improved risk management, animal disease preparedness and climate adaptation; enhancing competitiveness through investment, innovation, fairer returns for farmers and greater alignment of production standards for imports; improving sustainability through measures including targeted animal welfare reforms, plans to develop a harmonised methodology for monitoring livestock greenhouse gas emissions at farm level, and better nutrient management; supporting livestock farming across all regions, particularly vulnerable rural areas; and promoting EU livestock products through stronger origin labelling and quality recognition. The accompanying Protein Action Plan aims to increase the share of EU-grown protein used in feed from 25–35% by 2035 by supporting domestic protein crop production, investment, innovation and stronger value chains, with both initiatives intended to reinforce food security, reduce external dependencies and strengthen the resilience of the EU agri-food system.
