The National Trading Standards (NTS) has launched its ‘#NoBlameNoShame’ campaign to encourage conversations about scams and reduce the stigma surrounding it. The NTS has reported that 73% of adults in the UK have been targeted by scams, with 35% losing money because of it. The NTS has also reported that only 32% report the crime to the authorities and 42% do not tell their banks. The NTS’s research has shown that the most common feelings of victims of scam are being ‘angry’ with themselves, (46%), feeling ‘stupid’ (40%) and ‘embarrassed’ (38%). The NTS has further highlighted that of those that reported to the authorities, 47% were made to feel stupid or embarrassed. The ‘#NoBlameNoShame’ campaign follows this research and the NTS has also called on the government to ‘end the current postcode lottery for fraud victims, by ensuring every individual is properly supported, with tailored help depending on their needs’.
