Article summary

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published a Medtech innovation briefing—sourced from 11 studies—on artificial intelligence (AI) software for CT brain scans, which assesses CT images of individuals with suspected brain abnormalities and assists in clinical prioritisation of critical cases. The studies demonstrated the effectiveness of the software in detecting haemorrhages. However, the study conditions did not reflect clinical practice. There are also key uncertainties surrounding the evidence, in that six of the studies are abstracts and limited in methodological detail.
