The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and HM Courts and Tribunal Service have reported that magistrates' sentencing powers have been increased to help clear the backlog in the Crown Court. Magistrates can now issue prison sentences of 12 months for a single offence, up from a maximum of six months previously. According to the MoJ, this will free up an additional 17,000 days of Crown Court time annually.
