Article summary
Human rights organisation Justice, in collaboration with the Immigration Lawyers Practitioners' Association and Freedom from Torture, has published a briefing for MPs on the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, the legislation introduced by the government further to the Supreme Court’s declaration that its Rwanda policy was unlawful. Justice opposes the Bill on the grounds that it operates on a ‘legal fiction’ and fails to address the concerns expressed by the Supreme Court about the Rwandan asylum system. It also states that the Bill disapplies international treaties, breaches the European Convention on Human Rights, and attacks judicial scrutiny. This briefing was given ahead of the Bill’s second reading in the House of Commons.
