Article summary
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning about the importance of getting a safe gas check. The HSE refers to NHS worker Tony Deyn, who unknowingly used an unregistered gas engineer to replace a boiler in his home. After weeks of leaks following the installation, Tony called out another engineer who identified five serious defects which would have lead to a gas explosion, carbon monoxide exposure or scalding. The contractor was prosecuted by the HSE, given a 40 week sentence, 200 hours of community service and ordered to pay £5,263 in costs. The HSE recommends homeowners get gas appliances including boilers, cookers, fires, flues and pipework serviced every year by a qualified engineer listed on the Gas Safe Register.
