Article summary
The Secretary of State for the Home Department, Suella Braverman, has announced a plan to introduce further legal measures aimed at combating arrivals in small boats. It is understood the measures will expand the use of the asylum inadmissibility process, where asylum claims are rejected from some asylum seekers based on their means of entry. It is also understood that modern slavery laws will be restricted alongside asylum protection. The bill is said to include measures that would create a duty to remove anyone who ‘enters the UK illegally’ and a new power to detain without access to bail or judicial review. Illegal entrants may face more stringent re-entry bans. There has been no new announcement of any returns agreements with third countries, save for the Rwanda agreement, which remains subject to ongoing litigation.
