EDPS calls for clarification into processing EU producers’ personal data

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has recommended several measures in order to clarify the processing of personal data of EU producers of wine, spirits and agricultural products relating to geographic indication applications under the EU’s quality scheme. In his opinion on the proposal for a Regulation on EU geographical indications for wine, spirit drinks and agricultural products, and quality schemes for agricultural products, the EDPS states that the EU’s Intellectual Property Office and the European Commission act as joint controllers when assessing the application of a wine, spirit or agricultural product. As these applications may include the processing of producers’ personal data, the EDPS advises the Commission lays down the detailed responsibilities and tasks of the joint controllers in an implementing act in line with Article 28 of Regulation (EU) 2018/1725.
