The UK, France and Germany (E3) have announced that they will transfer United Nations (UN) sanctions on Iran into domestic regimes and maintain EU/UK sanctions under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) beyond the 18 October 2023 deadline. The extended sanctions include sanctions on individuals and entities involved in Iran’s missile, nuclear, and other weapons programs. A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has said that the extension of sanctions is a ‘legitimate and proportionate step in response to Iran’s actions’ and confirmed E3’s ongoing commitment to ‘preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.’ The FCDO has reported that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles are more than 18 times the JCPoA limit and that the actions of E3 do not violate the JCPoA.
