The European Commission has announced that the Council of the European Union has adopted a Regulation which will amend the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) mandate. The Regulation, which the Commission states will ‘allow the Agency to closely monitor and mitigate shortages of medicines and medical devices during major events and public health emergencies’, as well ‘facilitate faster approval of medicines which could treat or prevent a disease causing a public health crisis’, was previously endorsed by the European Parliament on 20 January 2022.
