The European Commission has adopted a contingency plan for food supply and food security in times of crisis. According to the Commission, the plan ‘acknowledges the overall resilience of the EU food supply chain, identifies existing shortcomings, and puts forward actions to improve preparedness at EU level’. In order to achieve what is set out in the plan, the Commission has also announced the establishment of a European Food Security Crisis preparedness and response Mechanism (EFSCM), consisting of a group of food supply chain experts from Member States and some non-EU countries, that is to exchange data, practices and strengthen co-ordination under the supervision of Commission.
