The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and 19 of its members have filed a complaint with the network of consumer protection authorities on the grounds of Meta engaging in unfair commercial practices through the changes to its services in the EU which require Facebook and Instagram users to either consent to the processing of their data for advertising purposes or pay in order not to be shown advertisements. BEUC is also considering whether this breaches the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (EU GDPR).
