The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) has published details of its 28–29 February 2024 meeting, in which it approved revisions to ‘Core principles for effective banking supervision’, and agreed to consult (in March 2024) on potential measures to address window-dressing behaviour by some banks in the context of the framework for global systemically important banks (G-SIBs). The BCBS has also reaffirmed its expectation that all aspects of Basel III will be implemented in full, consistently and as soon as possible.

It contains ten policy proposals which aim to increase the resilience of the centrally cleared ecosystem by improving participants’ understanding of central counterparty (CCP) initial margin calculations and potential future margin requirements. Responses are sought by 16 April 2024.

The Building Control Independent Panel (BCIP) has launched a call for evidence to gather stakeholder views on the future of England's building control system. Building on its recently published problem statement, the call for evidence sets out 16 questions covering areas such as Building Safety Regulator oversight, the balance between advice and enforcement, potential centralisation of enforcement functions and minimum inspection requirements. The feedback received will inform BCIP's recommendations to the government on reforming the building control system. The call for evidence closes on 29 August 2025.

The Building Control Independent Panel has published a report recommending wide-ranging reforms to England’s building control system, including the removal of dutyholder choice of regulator, the creation of fewer statutory Building Control Bodies, stronger enforcement powers, mandatory inspection standards, reforms to fees and funding, and the introduction of a national digital building control system. The BCIP, chaired by Dame Judith Hackitt and established following the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, found that the current mixed public and private model cannot consistently provide independent, conflict-free oversight of building work.

This topic is in light of discussions arising from the arbitration between Process & Industrial Developments Limited and The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) has published its 2024 International Arbitration Survey, focusing on the challenges posed by corruption in arbitration proceedings. The survey reveals that while 82% of respondents are confident in the arbitration process's ability to handle corruption issues, 64% express concern about potential abuse of the arbitral process in such cases. Notably, 67% of respondents favour introducing transparency rules for commercial arbitrations involving states or state-owned entities. The survey also indicates strong support for requiring 'clear and cogent' evidence for corruption allegations, and a majority advocate for additional best practice guidelines in arbitrations involving corruption allegations. These findings underscore the complex interplay between confidentiality, transparency, and procedural integrity in arbitrations dealing with corruption issues.

The British Computer Society (BCS) has urged a review of the law assuming reliability of computer evidence, following the Post Office scandal which over 700 of convictions of sub-postmasters based on computer evidence. BCS has called for an ‘end to the legal presumption that computer systems data are always correct, with no burden on the prosecution to prove it’.
