The BBC has published a thematic review of its migration output, undertaken by policy specialist, Dr Madeleine Sumption, MBE. The BBC Board-commissioned review assesses the impartiality and accuracy of BBC coverage of migration and considers if a sufficient breadth of voices and viewpoints is being reflected. It focuses particularly on News and Current Affairs and political programming across the UK. The review finds that the topic of migration is technically complex, emotional and contested. Despite this, it finds no consistent bias towards one point of view within the BBC’s coverage of migration and the quality of BBC coverage on migration has generally been high. However, the review does identify ‘risks to impartiality that point in multiple directions’ with stories often being told through a narrow political lens, focused on commentary from a small number of high-profile people and without exploring issues in greater depth or detail.
