The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint concerning a paid-for Facebook advertisement for an artificial intelligence (AI) companion app that portrayed an ‘AI girlfriend’ whose appearance and personality could be customised and who could be controlled by the user. The ASA found that the advertisement objectified women and reinforced the harmful gender stereotype that women should be submissive and compliant with men’s needs. The ruling reinforces that advertisers must ensure their advertising is socially responsible by considering not only the intended meaning of individual claims, but also the overall context of the advertisement and how it is likely to be interpreted by consumers. Advertisers should also ensure that their advertising does not normalise harmful attitudes or behaviours, including harmful gender stereotypes.
