Head injury including concussion

Head injury occurs when an external force causes brain injury. Symptoms may include altered mental state, loss of consciousness, headache, vomiting, irritability, lethargy and seizure.

Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. It may occur after a blow to the head, face or neck, or a force transmitted to the head.

Spinal cord injury including cauda equina syndrome

Spinal cord injury may cause loss of function and sensation. It may arise from trauma, tumours or inflammatory disease.

Cauda equina syndrome is caused by compression of multiple lumbosacral nerve roots. Causes include disc herniation, spinal stenosis, cancer, trauma, epidural abscess and haematoma. Sudden onset cauda equina syndrome is a medical emergency and may require urgent decompression.
