The Department of Health and Social Care has announced a clinical trial into alternating coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine doses in the UK. This study will be the first in the world to establish the effects of using varied vaccines for the first and second doses, meaning using Oxford/AstraZeneca’s vaccine for the first dose, followed by Pfizer/BioNTech’s vaccine for the second and backed by £7m of government funding. The 13-month study will monitor the impact of the different dosing on patients immune responses. Over 800 patients are expected to take part in this study and initial finding are to be released this summer. The study has been termed as extremely important as it will provide evidence on the safety of the vaccines used in different ways.
