The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined Bury-based company, Reliance Advisory Ltd (RAL), £250,000 for making 15.1 million nuisance calls, of which 1.1 million were connected, regarding claims management services over a sixth month period from the start of 2019. RAL were deemed to be in breach of electronic marketing law after the ICO received 85 complaints from members of the public who had not consented to receive the persistent calls. During the ICO investigation, RAL were unable to provide evidence of consent for a majority of the calls, and where consent was given, it was found that it was not freely given. Several complainants highlighted the distress caused by the calls as a number of them were of an aggressive and rude nature.
