The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has announced that the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) will be expanded to include an additional 38 square km, including the Stour estuary. The expansion will bring significant benefits to the area, allowing local business and tourist sites to promote the area as an AONB, enabling access to relevant grants. It also marks a significant step in implementing the recommendations of the Landscapes Review 2019, which called on the UK government to make UK landscapes more open and greener. The last time an AONB was extended was in 1991, in the nearby Dedham Vale. The extensions came into effect on 7 July 2020.
