The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a further £33m coronavirus (COVID-19) funding to help support light rail and tram operators during the pandemic. Emergency funding will be distributed over the next 11 weeks and will help support operators who continue to face reduced revenues. The funding aims to ensure services remain viable in the future and aid services as lockdown restrictions begin to ease. This funding is additional to the £160m funding that has been announced by the UK Government, taking the support offered to light rail and tram operators in Nottingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Blackpool, Manchester and Birmingham, during the pandemic to nearly £200m.
