The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has published a White Paper on ‘powering our net zero future’, which sets out plans to ‘clean up our energy system and keep bills affordable’ during the transition to carbon neutrality. The White Paper sets out steps the government plans to take over the next decade to cut emissions from industry, transport, and infrastructure while supporting new green jobs. Notably, the Energy White Paper also confirms that a UK ETS will replace the current EU ETS from 1 January 2021. Business and Energy Secretary, Alok Sharma, said that the White Paper represents a ‘decisive and permanent shift away from our dependence on fossil fuels, towards cleaner energy sources that will put our country at the forefront of the global green industrial revolution.’
