Ireland—Senate begins debate on stimulant drinks age restriction bill

The Seanad Éireann has begun consideration of the Public Health (Restriction on Sale of Stimulant Drinks to Children) Bill 2025, introduced as a Private Member's Bill on 8 May 2025. The legislation aims to prohibit the sale of stimulant drinks to persons under 18 years of age, mandate health warnings on product labels regarding excessive consumption, and regulate the advertisement and promotion of these products to children. The bill has completed First Stage and is currently at Second Stage in the Seanad, where its general principles are being debated.

TikTok Chinese data transfers draw €530m Irish privacy fine

Law360: Ireland's data protection regulator has hit TikTok with a €530m penalty for allegedly failing to adequately protect EU users' personal data that it transferred to China, the regulator announced 2 May 2025.

AI model providers get confirmation of delays to EU Code of Practice

MLex: Providers of general-purpose AI (GPAI) models including OpenAI, Google and Microsoft have had confirmation that the legal deadline for a final Code of Practice to help them comply with the EU AI Act will be missed and that they may not see it for a couple more months. The delay is due to efforts to align the Code with guidelines on GPAI rules, and to secure the support of major AI companies amid pressure from the US Government.

Wireless Connect turns to EU court to contest Irish National Broadband Plan

MLex: Wireless Connect Ltd, an Irish internet service provider, has asked the EU General Court to annul a decision from the European Commission, which last year found the Irish National Broadband Plan to be compatible with the EU rules on state aid. The company says that the Plan covers areas that it already services, therefore it should not have been considered eligible for public intervention.
