The European Green Deal is the European Commission’s sustainable growth strategy for Europe. It represents the Commission’s holistic response to the existential threats of climate change and biodiversity loss. It provides a blueprint for internal EU action and international cooperation to avoid the worst consequences of a warming planet, while helping citizens to adapt to unavoidable climate change and supporting businesses to transition to a sustainable economy.

Introduction to the European Green Deal

The European Green Deal Communication (the Green Deal) was published on 11 December 2019. It set out several overarching objectives to inform EU legislation and policy over the years following its publication. An initial European Green Deal roadmap (the Roadmap) of the key measures to be enacted in fulfilment of the Green Deal’s aims was also published.

One of the defining goals of the Green Deal is to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with an intermediary target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by ‘at least’ 50% below 1990 levels by 2030.
