DESNZ announces 100 schools now have Great British Energy solar panels

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that 100 schools and colleges across England have now installed Great British Energy solar panels. Around 250 schools and colleges in total are set to benefit by summer 2026 as part of a targeted rollout prioritising areas of deprivation in the North East, West Midlands and North West, as well as at least 10 schools in every region of England. The 250 schools and colleges are projected to save an estimated combined £220m over the lifetime of the solar panels, enabling reinvestment into classrooms.

Council of the EU adopts amended European Climate Law with binding 2040 target

The Council of the European Union has adopted the amended Regulation (EU) 2021/1119 (European Climate Law), which establishes the binding objective of climate neutrality by 2050 and a 2030 target of at least 55% net emissions reduction and sets a binding EU climate target for 2040. Under the amended regulation, the EU must reduce net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (after deduction of removals) by 90% compared to 1990 levels by 2040. This new milestone strengthens and complements the existing legally binding objective of climate neutrality by 2050.

DESNZ publishes response to consultation to extend CfD eligibility to nuclear lifetime extensions

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published its response to the consultation, confirming its intention to proceed with proposed amendments that would enable existing nuclear generating stations to qualify for Contract for Difference (CfD) support for lifetime-extension activities. The government plans to lay regulations before Parliament to incorporate the consultation's policy proposals into national legislation, subject to Parliamentary approval.
