Electricity taxation

Introduction

This is an overview of the key content to be found in our Electricity taxation subtopic. It briefly explains the nature of this content and provides links to it. It also provides the background to the key tax regime covered in our Electricity taxation content, the Electricity Generator Levy. For details of our content providing a more general overview of how the Great Britain (GB) energy market fits together, including the structure and regulation of the electricity market, see our Overarching GB gas and electricity market regulation subtopic.

The primary focus of our content in this subtopic is on Electricity Generator Levy (EGL), which is a temporary 45% charge on exceptional receipts from wholesale electricity generation in the UK. It is essentially a windfall tax on electricity generators in circumstances where the price of electricity is exceptionally high.
