The publishing industry is a significant contributor to the UK’s economy and culture, with industry income reaching a record high of £6.9bn in recent years.

As in other content sectors, in the publishing industry, the lines are blurring between technology and content companies and previously successful business models have been challenged and disrupted in the last two decades.

The publishing industry

Publishers make content available in a range of formats and for a variety of purposes and audiences. Formats include books, ebooks, websites, online databases and other digital products, journals, newspapers, apps, magazines and many others. Audiences include both the general public and sector-specific audiences, with certain publications designed to target the trade, academic, scientific, or education sectors.

Publishers and legal and other professionals working in publishing deal with a variety of issues including: rights acquisition, rights licensing, digital distribution, pre-publication risk and disputes in relation to traditional and digital publishing. They advise and deal with publishers, individual authors and celebrities. More specifically they are dealing with and advising on:

  1. clearance and acquisition of content and rights
