The Welsh Minister for Climate Change, Julie James MS, has announced the allocation of £50m to the National Empty Homes Grant scheme in Wales over the next two years. The scheme could see up to 2,000 disused empty properties brought back into use and will run concurrently with other Welsh government schemes such as Leasing Scheme Wales. The scheme will make available a grant of up to £25,000 for owners of properties which have been registered empty with the local authority for a minimum of 12 months prior to commencement of the works. The grant must be used to remove significant hazards from the properties and improve energy efficiency, and upon the completion of the works the applicant must then live in that property as their main and only residence for a minimum of five years.
