Secretary of State, Gavin Williamson, has given a statement concerning the return of students to universities following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Williamson emphasises the priority of the government being ‘to keep young people as safe as possible while they continued to learn’ and discusses the ‘Lifetime Skills Guarantee’ which was announced by the Prime Minister. Universities have undertaken various measures to keep campuses safe such as through increased cleaning, social distancing and staggered timetables. However, Williamson admits that ‘this will not be the start’ students were expecting or would have chosen but he is glad to see adherence with government guidance.
