Following signature of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) on 30 December 2020, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has announced provisional arrangements including plans to set temporary catch limits for UK fishermen to ensure fishing continues uninterrupted until annual fisheries negotiations with the EU, Norway and Faroe Islands conclude. The government will announce the quotas after consultation with the UK devolved administrations and Marine Management Organisation (MMO). Under the TCA, UK vessels are permitted to fish in EU waters and EU vessels in UK waters. However, from 1 January 2020, UK and EU vessels must not fish in each other's waters without a licence. Until agreement is reached with Norway and the Faroe Islands, UK vessels are not permitted to fish in their waters and vice versa. Licensing of UK and EU vessels will begin in due course.
