The European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety has adopted its position on a proposed regulation which establishes requirements for the entire packaging life cycle, from raw materials to final disposal. The proposal will make packaging easier to recycle and reuse, decrease unnecessary packaging and waste, boost the use of recycled material, and put a ban on polyfluorinated alkyl substances in food packaging. MEPs also want the sale of very light weight plastic carrier bags below 15 microns, to end and will lay out certain waste reduction targets for plastic packaging, which include 10% by 2030, 15% by 2035 and 20% by 2040.
